At a Jewish Leadership Awards ceremony on June 13, Rabbi Chaim Cohen, MADA Community Center’s Executive Director, and Yossi Drihem, Assistant Director, were presented with Federation CJA’s Award for Excellence in Community Programming, which honours non-profit organizations or community programs for outstanding achievements.

“We are guided by the belief that everyone matters,” said Rabbi Chaim Cohen, “and we want to inspire others to make a difference in our community. By saving one life, it is as if we are saving the world.”

Rabbi Chaim Cohen, under the direction of the Lubavitcher Rebbe and inspired by his philosophy that “we are all family,” opened MADA in 1993 as a centre dedicated to the well-being of the Jewish community. Twenty-five years later, he and Yossi Drihem, David Merovitz, staff, volunteers and clients alike have expanded MADA from a single cafeteria to an organization that meets the needs of so many of our community’s most marginalized members.

From its new headquarters on Decarie Blvd., MADA distributes thousands of hot meals and well-stocked food boxes year round and provides quality clothing and home furnishings to those in need. On Jewish holidays, thousands of people attend MADA’s festive meals at multiple locations around Montreal and enjoy the warmth, companionship, and spirit of the holiday.

Despite many challenges and the growing demand for services, MADA continues to evolve in order to meet the community’s emerging needs. Its newest initiative, Goods4Good, is a clothing store offering new high-end clothing at attractive prices, with all proceeds going towards MADA’s many programs. Rabbi Cohen and his team continue to build on MADA’s philosophy that “everyone matters, and we are all family.”
