For the very first time in its history, the Chevra (Chevra Kadisha B’nai Jacob Beit Hazikaron Beth Hillel) on Clanranald Avenue in Snowdon is planning a mission to Israel May 2 to 14.
“Israel is turning 70,” charismatic Rabbi Asher Jacobson was telling me last week. “It is time for us to show our support.
Longtime Chevra member and past president Mish Granik is co-chairing the mission with Kathy Halmi. “I have only been to Israel once on my 25th wedding anniversary in 1984,” a fired up Mish told me. “So many of our synagogue members and their friends have never been to Israel. Maybe the reason why is our synagogue never organized such a trip.”
Rabbi Asher Jacobson noted that the mission is open to anyone.
Added Halmi: “I have travelled to Israel five previous times, mostly for family occasions.I am thrilled to be going back this time to get a new perspective, under the leadership of our inspirational and brilliant Rabbi Jacobson . It will be especially meaningful to be in our Jewish homeland to celebrate her 70th birthday.”
