Have you heard about the gentleman who has been seen walking the streets of Côte Saint-Luc, NDG and Westmount carrying a huge Israeli flag?

This individual can be.   He is an “activist” and after the first demonstration in support of Israel and the freeing of the hostages on Oct. 29 he started to walk every week between 30 to 40 km carrying a huge Israeli flag.  Regardless of snow, sleet, rain or frigid temperatures he continues to show his undying support for the Jewish State.
“It creates conversations; people honk their horns to show recognition and more,” says Nechama Surik, a native of Israel.

The flag bearer is noted NDG musician Edwin Brownell, Nechama’ s husband.

“I am so so proud of him,” said Nechama, who wanted this story to be a surprise for the man I call “Sir Edwin. “We get phone calls and messages of support,” Nechama continued. “It’s crazy.  The beauty in this is that   Edwin is not Jewish, but he is our best ambassador.  This is important that a non-Jew is marching daily for so long waving the huge Israeli flag.   I am so so proud of all my husband’s activities and felt that I need to share this. We are getting lots of pictures on social media from motorists who snap a shot as they pass, and Edwin says that so many people are showering him with positive vibes. He is deeply honored to be able to make this small contribution at this difficult time.”

Paul Hirschson, Israel’s Consul General, recently welcomed Edwin and Nechama to his Westmount offices. He wanted to meet the flag bearer in person to thank him for his efforts.

During the COVID lockdowns Edwin held a series of virtual concerts, often raising money for different charities.
